Introduction to Moments

Introduction to Moments

Prof Jonny Freeman

It is a pleasure to share this post announcing today’s publication of our first Foresight report, Introduction to Moments – A foresight study on the creative industries.

Introduction to Moments is delivered as CoSTAR Foresight Lab’s initial contribution to mapping ways forward for the UK to maintain its world-leading position in gaming, TV, film, performance, and digital entertainment.

A foresight report shouldn’t make easy reading. It should challenge. It should inspire. It should ask questions. And it should encourage the reader to generate more questions. These have been guiding principles for Goldsmiths’ CoSTAR Foresight Lab Research Fellow, Jac Sanscartier, and her partner in foresight, Noemi Ponzoni, Research Lead at CoSTAR Foresight Lab Delivery Partner, i2 media research, as together they crafted Introduction to Moments, with their teams and colleagues, and with the lab’s Foresight Board. It’s not a long report, but take the time to read it and engage with it, reflectively.

  • Understand the emerging areas of complexity it summarises:

Who gets to own machine learning?
What platforms will facilitate culture?
How will creative work evolve?

  • Contemplate the uncertainties identified

  • Immerse yourself in the scenarios of the future it presents, brought to life so compellingly by our visual artist Jiarong Yu.

  • Take time to consider the questions it raises, the potential implications emerging, and the areas of future research it suggests.

The insights and foresight from Introduction to Moments will provide a platform for Foresight Lab’s research over coming years. Because of this, we’re taking the time to reflect on our findings, and invite you to do the same. We want to consult on the report’s implications. So if you’re inspired, infuriated, excited, or just curious, please get in touch.

Similarly, if you’d like to work with us or discuss how we can work with you to interpret the ‘so-whats’ of our findings for your business, enterprise, or organisation, then please let us know.

You can reach us at costarforesightlab@gold.ac.uk

Wishing you a satisfying read, and fascinating reflections along, of course, with a very restful festive break.

See you next year!
