Screen Lab

A world-class virtual production research and innovation lab advancing real-time screen and performance technologies for film, TV, gaming, and digital entertainment.

The Screen Lab is a state-of-the-art virtual production facility that is set to become a global hub for the creative industries, driving the next generation of in-camera visual effects technologies that will revolutionise the UK’s film, TV and performing arts industries. The lab is based at Studio Ulster, a large-scale virtual production campus at Belfast Harbour Studios. The Screen Lab is led by an Ulster University consortium which brings together key stakeholders from Northern Ireland Screen, BBC, specialist animation studio Humain, and others.

How it works at screen lab

Funding and Support

We will be involved in Access Programmes focusing on either Enterprise and Commercialisation (E&C) or Prototyping and pilots Programme (PPP). E&C supports early growth businesses and startups with a series of development programmes and PPP invites innovators to apply for funding for specific project opportunities. The Access Programmes are run by the CoSTAR National Lab and can be accessed from any of our labs across the UK.

The Screen Lab offers world-class in-camera virtual effects technology and provides a unique environment integrated into a commercial virtual production complex, for the development of tools and production pipelines that enhance real-time visual effects. The research lab is placed inside of the world’s most technologically advanced virtual production studios.

HumainHumain is VFX studio specialising in digital human creation. They collaborate with CoSTAR to advance virtual production technologies, with expertise in motion capture, 3D scanning, and character creation. Humain enhances immersive storytelling, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the screen industries.

Professor Declan KeeneyDirector, CoSTAR Screen Lab

With over 25 years of media industry experience, including 13 years at the BBC, Professor Declan Keeney is the co-founder and CEO of Studio Ulster, located at Belfast Harbour. He champions sustainability through cutting-edge virtual production technologies, and leads the CoSTAR Screen Lab — a £14m R&D&I investment in creative technologies. His recent research on the carbon-reducing potential of virtual production underscores his commitment to achieving net zero in the film, television, and gaming industries. Professor Keeney serves as Northern Ireland Governor on the British Film Institute’s Board, is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, and a member of the British Council’s Arts & Creative Economy Advisory Group. 

Professor Frank Lyons MBECo-Director

Professor Frank Lyons is Associate Dean of Research and Innovation at Ulster University and Co-Director of the CoSTAR Screen Lab. He leads innovation at the intersection of technology, creativity, and the arts, serving as Ulster University SRO on the £75m Studio Ulster project. He co-led bids securing £30m in AHRC funding for creative industries in Northern Ireland. An internationally recognized composer, his works have been performed worldwide and broadcast by BBC, RTE, and NPR. His research in creative technologies and disability has been rated ‘world-leading,’ and he was awarded an MBE in 2019 for services to Music and Higher Education.

Professor Paul MooreCo-Director

Professor Paul Moore is an academic in creative technologies and cultural policy at Ulster University. As Co-Director of CoSTAR Screen Lab, he brings extensive expertise in digital innovation and creative industries, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers. He is also Director of Future Screens NI – the AHRC and now Department for Communities NI funded creative industries cluster for NI – and is a Co-Director of Ulster’s Creative Industries Institute (CII). 

Karen FlemingCo-Director

Professor Karen Fleming is a researcher and academic specialising in textiles, design, and sustainable practices at Ulster University. As Co-Director of CoSTAR Screen Lab, she draws on her extensive experience in creative collaboration and her interdisciplinary approach to design and innovation. She was a co-investigator of the AHRC-funded Creative Industry Cluster ‘Future Screens NI’ and is currently Ulster University Director of the Northern Bridge Consortium. She is academic chair of University Athena Swan (gender equality), having previously served as Research Director and Head of Belfast School of Art. 

Lyndsay CampbellProject Coordinator

Lyndsay is the Project Coordinator at CoSTAR Screen Lab, where she supports the planning, delivery, and administration of the project. She brings a diverse professional background and a passion for supporting the creative industries. Lyndsay has spent the last few years managing local and international theatre projects and is now excited to contribute to this innovative project at the forefront of developing cutting-edge screen technologies.
